AKA the NOIM - This document is completed with you and your partners details. You are required to show me your passport (expired is okay) OR a birth certificate and photo ID. This is so I can confirm your identity and birth place. If either party or both parties to the marriage have been married before - I must witness either a divorce certificate or death certificate before the wedding.
I will also ask for parent details if known and record these.
The NOIM needs to be received no later than one month prior to the wedding and no earlier than 18 months prior.
I am required to witness at least one parties signature to "receive" the NOIM. I can also sight your signatures over Zoom until the 31st of December 2023* if we aren't close enough to meet!
I then keep this form secure in my locked filing cabinet until your marriage, complete the required section post ceremony and send it to Births, Deaths and Marriages.
*Laws may then be changed
This form we complete as close to the marriage as possible. This ensures that we record any changes in your details since completion of the NOIM such as a new address, occupation etc. This form also confirms your marital status, this is important especially if your divorce was still "pending" at the time of completing the NOIM.
This will also be sent to Births, Deaths and Marriages after your marriage ceremony.
We complete two of these during the ceremony with your witnesses. One of these I will keep for 6 years on file. One I will send with your other paperwork to Births, deaths and marriages.
Finally, you will also sign a decorative marriage certificate that you will get to keep. This will have the location, date, witness signatures and our signatures. This is not a legal document to help you change your name.
You will require an official certificate to be issued from Births, Deaths and Marriages - I can organise this on your behalf for Queensland marriages and you will be invoiced directly from BDM $54 (approximately) for this certificate. Then you can change your name on your licence, bank accounts etc.
